Permit to Carry  

  

Applicant Must:

  • be a citizen, a naturalized citizen or a resident alien;
  • be a resident of Linn County;
  • be twenty-one (21) years of age;
  • provide a valid driver's license or other picture ID with current address provided by the State of Iowa.

All orders require a valid email address to communicate the status of your order.  You will be notified via email whether your application has been approved or denied.  You will be required to to provide to show your valid form of identification and training documentation from a class with an instructor certified by the Iowa Department of Public Safety, including NRA certified Instructor or a DD214 that states honorable discharge.  If you are unable to upload this information to your application, you can come in person to the Sheriff's Office at, 310 2nd Ave SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404. As required by the State of Iowa, you must provide training documentation to receive a Permit to Carry. The address on your application must match the address on your identification.

new permit to carry requires a fee of $50 and a valid driver's license or non-operator I.D. that contains your photograph and current address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation. The permits are valid for five years from the date of issue.  If the permit is denied, $50.00 will be reimbursed to the applicant. The Sheriff's Office will retain the remainder for processing and handling of the application.

Renewing your current permit to carry requires a fee of $25 and a valid driver's license or non-operator I.D. that contains your photograph and current address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation. The permits are valid for five years from date of issue.  If the renewal is denied, $25.00 will be reimbursed to the applicant.  The Sheriff's Office will retain the remainder for processing and handling of the application.  All applications for renewal MUST be received within 30 days PRIOR to the expiration and within 30 days AFTER the expiration of your current permit to carry.

A duplicate permit to carry requires a fee of $25 and a valid driver's license or non-operator I.D. that contains your photograph and current address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation.

A permit to acquire weapons requires a fee of $25 and a valid driver's license or non-operator I.D. that contains your photograph and current address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation. A permit to acquire is valid for five years from the date of issue.
